Yoga . Reiki

I have been practicing yoga since I was a teenager, on and off. Initially, I’ll admit, I wasn’t a huge fan. It was a much slower pace compared to the sports I played and I was just not very flexible. Fun Fact: I’m still not.

Over the years, I grew to truly love yoga- with the help and encouragement of some knowledgable and caring instructors. Yoga helped me to manage stress and anxiety and added variety to my workouts. Although, when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016, it took on a new role for me. Yoga helped me truly recognize the great mental and physical healing benefits of the practice. With the help and guidance of a few amazing teachers throughout treatment and recovery, I was able to focus at least an hour a week on my self care and self healing. My yoga practice eased fatigue and stress. It increased my gratitude and joy. And it greatly improved my range of motion after my bilateral mastectomy.

This physical and mental shift inspired me to obtain my 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training Certificate in early 2018 at the same studio where many of these healing moments occurred, Yoga Sol in Yorba Linda, CA. I entered the program with a goal to deepen my own personal practice and to be able to share my passion and the joys of yoga with others. I graduated from the teacher training program filled with self love, even more love and gratitude for everyone and everything around me, and ready to help make positive shifts in my community.

My favorite aspect of yoga is its non-competitive nature- which allows us to focus on self-care and self-love, things we often overlook in our busy lives. I may not be the bendiest bitch on the street and that’s ok. I am a work in progress, forever a student, and far from perfection- yet joyful as F***.

My first experience with Reiki was during a visit with my mom’s social worker just before she was discharged from the hospital on hospice, shortly after New Years of 2008. I remember the social worker placing her hands around my mom, sometimes gently placing them on her or just hovering above. I asked if she was doing some sort of massage and that’s when I learned my first bit about energy healing.

During my mom’s transition from this world, I felt completely helpless as many people do while watching someone they love in pain. After she passed, I received my level I Reiki certification because I wanted to be able to help others the way that woman helped my mom that day. To hopefully help give peace during scary and difficult times.

I sat with that certification for nearly 10 years. Only ever doing sessions for John, Petey- our dog, myself, and our kids. Never feeling confident enough to share it with others. Then when I was diagnosed, I was blessed to have someone show up and greatly help me through some scary times with reiki / energy healing. Her sessions helped me feel like I was able to take some sort of control over my health, healing, and well being- while swimming through appointments and waiting for treatments to begin.

It was then that I decided I absolutely wanted to share energy healing beyond my inner circle and chose to further my education in energy healing- I have since received two more reiki certifications since diagnosis- including the ability to perform distance reiki sessions. (Meaning we do not have to be in the same room, city, state, etc. for the session) I love being able to offer this complimentary therapy to other survivors, no matter where they are on their path.

Reiki is classified as an energy therapy (non-invasive)- said to aid in relaxation, assist in the body’s natural healing processes, and to develop emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. It is a complementary or alternative health approach. Reiki does not directly cure diseases or illnesses. Instead, it’s used as a way to manage symptoms and improve general well-being.

Reiki is based on the idea that energy is transmitted through the Reiki practitioner from a universal energy source to the client to raise or improve the flow of the client’s life-force energy.
